This week marked the long-awaited end of the online retail giant’s monopoly on the practice, as the patent for 1-click buying has finally ended. It’s been nearly two decades since the Seattle-based firm first patented the practice, and now, the floodgates have opened.

If you’re unfamiliar with the payment option, the process is much as the name suggests. Amazon customers can buy items with a single click — there’s no need for entering billing, payment, or shipping information. And while you may not have realized it, Amazon is in fact the one of the only such retailers who allows you to buy so seamlessly. It will be interesting to see how this new possibility affect the e-commerce industry.
